Fab Road Trip Vehicle Has Arrived…The Mazda CX-9!

The Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD is Road Trip Ready!

It’s no secret I’m a fan of Mazda.  I loved test driving the Mazda6 Grand Touring sedan so much I went out and bought one (lol).  So when I saw the newly re-designed CX-9 at the auto show earlier this year I knew I wanted to take one for a spin.  After driving it for a week, I feel that a fabulous road trip vehicle has arrived and it’s definitely the Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring.

Snowflake white pearl with sand leather interior!

Performance wise this SUV is no slouch.  The Skyactive-G 2.5 turbo engine delivers 250HP without hesitation. The acceleration is smooth and quick when you need it.  So smooth you’d think it was a V6 when it’s actually a 4-cylinder.

This is one gorgeous luxury SUV.  It’s capable of handling your everyday commuter needs and sleek and attractive enough to attend an event at the White House.  I have to admit the week I drove it, it was a head turner and everyone was impressed when they realized it was a Mazda.

The Mazda CX-9 has one gorgeous interior!

I loved that the interior is super comfortable (Nappa leather tends to do that lol), attractive and functional.  The controls are easily accessible to the driver and the passenger.  The front leather seats are heated along with the mirrors.  This is my favorite winter feature.  The 8 inch touchscreen was vibrant, easy to read and use.  The navigation system display is vibrant and realistic with images that mirror the actual road.  Other nav systems have confused me but the Mazda display with the realistic views of exit/highway signs and lanes totally eliminated the confusion for me. If you buy a new Mazda, please get one with the navigation package…you’ll love it!

The Mazda CX-9 is all dressed up and ready for a road trip!

If you’re taking this beauty on a family road trip, rest assured you’ll be comfortable with enough space for everyone.  Storage for luggage might be tough if you need to use the 3rd row seating but without using it you definitely have enough space for suitcases and a few toys.  You definitely have enough space for the weekly grocery run (lol).

Let’s talk tech for a minute…

We love the fabulous technology available for today’s cars and the Mazda CX-9 is filled with the fabulous tech we’ve come to love and expect plus a lot more.  The ‘grand touring’ model has windshield projected active drive display (my favorite), rear view camera (standard), full-color touchscreen display with voice command (yes voice command) just to name a few.  The CX-9 Grand touring has Mazda’s awesome realistic navigation system (as we mentioned earlier), lane departure warning, lane keep assist and the features I think should be standard on every vehicle…smart brake support and smart city brake support.  The smart city brake & brake support alone are instrumental in avoiding head-on/rear impact (the car in front) collisions which in turn keep you and your passengers safe!  In summary these two features will stop the car if you’re about to rear-end someone.  I’ll tell you a story in my next article on how these features literally saved my life while driving my Mazda6.

Check out this video with the fab tech options in use…

Overall this is a great SUV with 7-passenger/3 row seating ability.  The one minor thing I’d change or like to suggest Mazda add are more cigarette lighter adapters/charging ports up front. In this model there’s only one upfront on the lower side of the console on the passenger side.  That could be a little problematic if you forget to setup your charging before you start driving.

The numbers please…

Price tested:  $43,610  |  Annual fuel cost:  $1,600  |  Fuel economy:  20 city/26 hwy  |  Warranty:  60 month/60K mile powertrain & 36K mile bumper-to-bumper

  1. This car is so impressive! I had a 2008 Grand Touring CX-9 and it was a great car then too. My kids actually miss it and so do I. The amount of space for traveling, the kids’ gear, groceries, etc. is wonderful and it performs really well! I love all the new upgrades. It’s a great choice for anyone in the market for an SUV.
