You’re thinking, Kirstin this is an old travel tip (lol). Believe it or not, some travelers are still waiting till they get to the airport to check-in and get boarding passes. Yesterday while watching the news I saw a story about major flight delays at Reagan National Airport due to a power outage in Atlanta. Say what now? Yes a power outage at a major airlines hub in Atlanta caused major delays in DC because it took all of their computers offline for hours!
Can we say nightmare?!
This happened early in the day at the busiest travel time, the morning flight rush hour. If you hadn’t already completed your check-in and received your boarding passes, you were literally stuck. They had to check-in passengers manually. Needless to say the lines were ridiculously long.
How can we avoid this potential nightmare?
- Check-in Online at home! All airlines give you the option of checking in 24 hours before your flight. This is my favorite way to check-in because I can print my boarding passes and complete my seat reservation before I even leave for the airport.
- Paperless check-in with an app anyone?! I know my tech savvy ‘Travelin Divas’ love to check-in for flights via the airlines’ app downloaded to their smartphones. This way you can use a special barcode as your boarding pass. That’s wonderful but if the computers and scanners are down and you don’t have a paper boarding pass as a back-up…you’re stuck!
- Arrive super early! Can’t stress this enough, but we all really should arrive at the airport at least 1.5 hours before a flight. You never know what you’ll run into when you arrive for your flight.
Traveling is hectic enough without the added nightmare of a flight delay that’s out of your control. Remember a prepared traveler is a happy traveler. Check-in online 24 hours before your flight and get all of your boarding passes and information early. This way you can proceed straight to security checkpoints and take your shoes off (lol).
Which do you prefer, online-paper or app check-in?!
